Omega-3 für Hunde – warum Lachsöl & Leinöl unverzichtbar sind

Omega-3 for Dogs – Why Salmon Oil & Linseed Oil Are Essential

Shiny coat, healthy joints, strong immune system – omega-3 fatty acids are absolutely essential for dogs and cats. We explain why and how you can use them correctly.

🐟 What are omega-3 fatty acids?

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids – this means the body cannot produce them itself and must obtain them through food. The most important ones for dogs and cats are:

  • EPA & DHA – from fish oil (e.g., salmon oil) – directly usable
  • ALA – from plant sources (e.g., flaxseed oil) – must first be converted

💪 Why does my dog need omega-3?

  • 🐕 Shiny, healthy coat – dry skin and dull coat are often a sign of omega-3 deficiency
  • 🦴 Healthy joints – especially important for older dogs and large breeds
  • 🧠 Strong immune system – omega-3 has anti-inflammatory properties
  • 👁️ Healthy eyes – DHA is important for the retina
  • 👶 Brain development in puppies – DHA promotes cognitive development
  • ❤️ Heart health – EPA supports heart function

🐟 Salmon oil vs. flaxseed oil – which is better?

Both oils have their benefits – it's best to combine them:

  • 🐟 Salmon oil: Contains EPA & DHA – directly usable, ideal for coat, joints & immune system
  • 🌿 Flaxseed oil: Contains ALA – plant-based source, good for the skin & as a supplement

Tip: Salmon oil is particularly important for cats – cats can hardly convert ALA from flaxseed oil!

🥄 How much oil should I give?

As a rule of thumb, about 1 ml per 5 kg of body weight per day. Simply drizzle over the food – most dogs love the taste!
