Spring is here – and with it come shedding, increased desire for movement, and a change in your cat's energy needs. Now is the perfect time to take a look at their diet. Because what applies to dogs applies even more to cats: Variety is not a luxury, but a necessity.
🐱 Cats are obligate carnivores – no compromise
Unlike dogs, cats are strict carnivores. Their bodies are designed to obtain energy and nutrients almost exclusively from animal sources. Specifically, this means:
- Wet food and fresh meat should always consist of pure meat cans – without vegetables, grains, or fillers
- Organs (liver, heart, kidney) are particularly valuable for cats and should be regularly included in their diet
- Vegetables and fiber? Dry food already provides these in sufficient quantities – they are not needed in wet food or fresh meat
🥩 The perfect combination: Dry + Wet + Fresh
The best diet for your cat is not an either-or decision. A combination of all three components provides optimal nutrition:
1. Dry food – as a base
Provides fiber, minerals, and is practical to handle. Important: choose a high meat content, grain-free or gluten-free option.
2. Wet food – pure meat cans, daily
Here's the rule: the purer, the better. Pure meat cans without vegetables or grains are ideal because cats don't need fiber in wet food – they already get it from dry food. At the same time, wet food provides valuable moisture, which cats often don't get enough of through drinking alone.
3. Fresh meat & organs – 2–3 times a week
Fresh muscle meat, heart, or liver fed directly – that's what a cat's body is made for. And here's a practical tip: You don't have to shop specifically for it! What you cook yourself can often be used. Are you cooking chicken, beef, turkey, or lamb? A small piece of it – unseasoned – is a real highlight for your cat.
Important to know:
- ✅ Raw pork – absolute no-go (Aujeszky's disease, life-threatening for cats & dogs)
- ✅ Cooked pork – no problem, feel free to give it
- ✅ Beef, poultry, lamb, game, fish – raw or cooked, both are excellent
- ✅ Always unseasoned – no onions, no garlic, no salt
💡 The fat myth – explained
Many owners shy away from giving their pet fatty meat. Yet, fat is a vital energy source – especially for cats and dogs. Animal fat provides essential fatty acids, fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K), and is the preferred energy source for carnivores. A natural fat content in meat is not a problem – it is desirable. What truly harms is inferior quality, excessive amounts, or incorrect food – not fat itself.
🌿 Vital Plus: 2 times a week as a preventative measure
Especially in spring – when the body is undergoing changes – targeted dietary supplementation is beneficial. Vital Plus is a 100% natural moor product with humic acid that supports the immune system, detoxification, coat, and joints – for all animal species, including your cat.
Recommendation: 2 times a week as a preventative measure – Vital Plus is already liquid and can be administered in many ways:
- Directly into the mouth – in small, pure quantities
- On dry food – simply add it, it dries within a short time
- Under wet food – simply mix it in
- On fresh meat – pour it directly over
If it's a bit thicker, just add a splash of still water and shake briefly.
